Good Old-Fashioned Barbecued Chicken

Sharing is caring!

An easy, basic, barbecue sauce that you can whip up in just minutes that tastes just like you remember when you were a child! VERY handy when the store shelves are empty, and when you just want something homemade and delicious, that tastes just like Grandma used to make!

Just in time for the 4th of July, the quintessential, summer grilling, party food!

Barbecued chicken!!

Who doesn’t LOVE a delicious, juicy, fall-off-the bone-tender piece of chicken, hot off the grill, right?

And my method doesn’t have you sweating for hours over hot coals! This way to do it starts right in the oven!

SUPER simple! Just season your chicken pieces, (*preferable skin-on/bone-in!), with a nice amount of regular salt and black pepper, and place them into a sprayed baking dish.

Cover the dish with a lid or foil, and bake!

While the chicken is baking, whip up the easy-as-apple-pie barbecue sauce!

*You can even play with it a little if you want! Want it spicier with a little heat? Add a small dash or two of cayenne or hot sauce, and chipotle powder and/or chili powder! Want a little bit of a smokey flavor? Add in a LITTLE bit of liquid smoke! (*Add SMALL amounts at a time, though! That stuff is POTENT!)

Once the chicken has baked, it’s basically already done! Now we just have to finish it on the grill in front of our guests, who think we’ve already been slaving away for them! (wink! wink!)

Just heat the grill to medium and slather the pieces generously with lots of sauce.

Place the pieces onto the hot, oiled grates, and baste and turn for only 20 – 30 minutes.

And…barbecued chicken perfection!!

Isn’t it just GORGEOUS?! Don’t you just want to reach right in and grab a piece (or three?!)

TENDER.

JUICY.

FALL-OFF-THE-BONE DELICIOUSNESS, right there!!

And it basically takes HALF the time that it would had it been done from start to finish on the grill! It’s just been WAY too hot to do that, lately!

The only secret, really, to making this some of the best chicken ever?

LOTS of sauce. Basting and turning OFTEN! And make sure to really cook that sauce on there. Get those grill marks!

And that’s all there is to it!

The first bite will take you straight back to days of innocence of climbing trees, catching lightning bugs, and playing “Marco Polo” in the family pool!

Hope you all enjoy! And have a wonderful, Happy (but SAFE!!) 4th of July!!

Good Old-Fashioned Barbecued Chicken

(Makes a little over 2 cups sauce)

8 – 10 pieces chicken, skin-on/bone-in, seasoned well on all sides with salt and pepper to taste

For Barbecue Sauce:

1 1/2 cups ketchup, I use Heinz

1/4 cup dark brown sugar, ok to sub light brown

1/4 cup lemon juice concentrate

1 Tbl. worcestershire sauce

2 tsp. apple cider vinegar

2 tsp. yellow table mustard, I use French’s

1/8 tsp. garlic powder

1/8 tsp. chipotle powder, can sub 1/16 tsp. each: chili powder and cayenne

1/8 tsp. onion powder

1/8 tsp. paprika

1/8 tsp. regular black pepper

Directions:

Bake salted and peppered chicken pieces at 350º for 1 hour, covered, in a sprayed baking dish. Remove to a serving platter or baking sheet, then grill for 20 – 30 minutes, basting with lots of barbecue sauce until chicken is done and fall-off-the-bone tender, *turning as needed*, (*often).

*You can put the finished chicken straight back onto the serving platter or baking sheet, because the chicken is cooked through after baking.

Simple as that. Just like what you had when you were a kid!

(Makes a little over 2 cups sauce.)
