Midwestern Coney Dogs

Ingredients

  • 1 lb. lean ground beef
  • 1/2 of a medium onion
  • 1/4 tsp. coarse ground black pepper
  • 1/8 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1/2 cup Sweet Baby Ray's Barbecue Sauce (or your own favorite)*
  • 1/2 cup Sue Bee Honey's Barbecue Sauce (or your own favorite)*
  • 1/2 tsp. chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp. sugar, or to taste
  • 1/2 cup water, or as needed
  • 6-8 cooked hotdogs
  • 6-8 buns
  • Toppings of Choice including: chopped onion, mustard, shredded cheddar cheese, sweet or dill pickles, pickle relish, chopped tomato, mac 'n cheese, or pickled jalapeƱo pepper rings

Instructions

  • In a frying pan, add hamburger, onion, salt and pepper. Saute until done, breaking up finely as you go along. Drain grease if needed.
  • Stir in rest of ingredients, bring to a simmer, stir and simmer until most of water has cooked out, but coney is still a little saucy.
  • Fill buns with cooked hot dogs, steamed or boiled, and ladle coney sauce over the top.
  • Top with toppings of choice if desired.
  • Notes

    *The barbecue sauces used are mild, sweet sauces.
