It seems all holidays, special occasions, and even sporting events have their “signature drinks”. New Year’s Eve has Champagne, The Kentucky Derby has it’s Mint Juleps, and the Super Bowl has….beer. Beer, beer, beer and more beer! (And an occasional Jell-o Shot!) 😉
But when it comes to the Super Bowl, it seems to be aaaaall about the beer! Not complaining! I LOVE beer! 😀 I admit it, I love it. I really do enjoy it! But when it’s a special event or a party, I just kinda want something a little more “special” to celebrate and be in a festive mood, you know?
So when the party lands at my house, and I have to buy gallons of cheap beer for all the guys to plow though, I find myself not reeaeallllly wanting to drink any of it! Fancy cocktails aren’t really my thing either, especially when an entire evening has to be filled. Nothing worse than a drunk hostess.
So, I wanted to come up with a way to use inexpensive beer and turn it into a nice cocktail that us girls would like, and yet still keep in the Super Bowl spirit of the whole “beer-thing”!
So into the fridge and freezer I poked my head, pilfering through what I had, and thought to pair beer with some frozen fruit I had on hand! I LOVE small town micro-brewery beers made with locally grown fruit, so I was off to a great start! I had wild blackberries! Blackberries + beer = GOOD STUFF! 😉
What else did I find? The last of a small bottle of white wine…well, that could work, right? Why not?!! 😀 I thought the two, (beer and wine), would be a great mix! 😀
So I dumped some frozen wild blackberries into the blender, added some white wine, a little lemon juice and some honey, gave it a whirl, and the color was GORGEOUS. OH, yes. THIS was WAY going to be a pretty girly-girl drink for sure!
I then poured that beautiful mixture into a pretty, tall, pilsner glass, slowly poured in a can of light beer….and….TAH-DAH! Magical! STUNNINGLY, sparkly, red carpet amazing looking!! BEGGING me to take it’s picture!!
It was exceptionally TASTY, too! Almost like a punch! I LOVED it! I mean, REALLY loved it!! 😀
But….this is going to have to be kept Top Secret!! Us girls are going to have to SNEAK out to the kitchen and make this girly-girl cocktail quietly! We’ll have to swear to tell the guys it’s a “frou-frou” cocktail so that they’ll want no part of it, so that we can fully indulge our secret treat! 😉 😉
But!! We’ll have to be EXTRA super careful not to make ANY YUMMY SOUNDS at ALL WHATSOEVER or our secret will be out!! So MUM’S the WORD girls!! 😉
So, I really hope you make this fun, “Super Girl Special” this Sunday for the Super Bowl game, too!! You’re really going to be surprised at how good this is!! And loaded with fruit? What’s not to love?!! 🙂 Enjoy the game and hope your party’s a success!! 🙂
My recipe was chosen as a host favorite!
WILD BLACKBERRY BEER COOLER
1 Super Bowl-Sized Cocktail
1/2 cup frozen wild blackberries, can sub red and/or white raspberries if preferred
1/3 cup white wine
1/2 tsp. lemon juice, fresh or concentrate
1 tsp. honey, less if berries are sweet (*wild blackberries are much smaller and more tart than regular blackberries)
1 (12 oz.) can any light beer
tiny pinch of Kosher salt, optional
Place frozen wild blackberries, white wine, lemon juice and honey into blender. Blend until smooth. Pour into tall pilsner glass.
Slowly pour in beer. Sprinkle with a teeny pinch of Kosher salt if desired and enjoy!
(*I just let it go “au naturale” and let the seeds sink to the bottom on their own. But you can always press the wine and berry mixture through a fine mesh strainer into the pilsner glass if preferred. But it really isn’t necessary.)
**I did end up spooning off the initial froth to remove the seeds in that. Then I just gave the glass a gentle swirl holding it, and created a new (seedless) froth. 😉
